TEHRAN (AFP) — A Japanese tourist released by kidnappers in southeastern Iran arrived in Tehran on Sunday ahead of his return home after spending eight months in captivity.

Paul Newman is battling cancer, an acquaintance of the Hollywood star said.

Reports that the 83-year-old is battling lung cancer have been circulating for months.

But the former heartthrob's spokesman said the actor was "doing nicely".
