MORT CRIM: Gratitude, hard times keep her grounded...

In 2000, a young actress went to pick up a prescription from her local pharmacy and was surprised to learn that she had no health insurance. She hadn't earned the requisite amount of money that year to stay covered. Not an atypical story for a struggling performer.

What was unusual was that this actress had just won an Oscar for "Boys Don't Cry." But the $3,000 she'd earned for the indie film was not enough for Screen Actors Guild insurance.

Now that Hilary Swank has her second Oscar, for "Million Dollar Baby," health coverage is not an issue. But she's no stranger to hard times.

Hilary was raised in a trailer park. When her father left, she and her mother headed to Hollywood, where they lived out of their car for two weeks.

Hilary landed a job on "Beverly Hills, 90210." Her contract was not renewed. But she never gave up.

The down-to--earth Swank often says she's just glad to be working -- which she continues to do with great success.

Today's thought: Hilary Swank embodies the Hollywood dream. But it's her sense of gratitude that keeps her feet on the ground.
