HAY RIVER, N. W. T. -- A man accused of killing a Mountie in the Northwest Territories has been ordered to stand trial.

Emrah Bulatci, 23, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Const. Chris Worden in Hay River last October. Worden, who joined the force in 2002, was shot after responding to a call at a suspected drug house.

Bulatci was arrested a week later in Edmonton, where he was also facing several drug-related charges.

MONTREAL -- Three brazen bandits were on the lam after using a Montreal priest as bait to waylay armoured truck guards and swipe their valuable cargo.

The robbers entered the southwestern Montreal presbytery and snagged the priest first, tying him up late Wednesday morning.

Police say the trio then lay in wait for the armoured truck to make a scheduled stop at the church in the largely working-class neighbourhood.

The two guards on the truck were ambushed and overpowered and bags of cash were scooped from the truck.

The crime scene was about a block from a city police station.

VANCOUVER -- The future of Vancouver's controversial supervised-injection site is likely headed for the Supreme Court of Canada, says the lawyer representing a group fighting to keep the facility open.

Ottawa has filed its appeal of a B. C. Supreme Court decision that struck down sections of federal drug laws and ensures Insite will remain open as a constitutionally protected health-care service.

But lawyer Monique Pongracic-Speier predicts the case won't be settled at the B. C. Court of Appeal, regardless of the outcome.

"I think there is a realistic chance that this will go up to the Supreme Court of Canada," Pongracic-Speier said in an interview Wednesday.

Insite opened in the city's troubled Downtown Eastside as a pilot project in 2003 under a special exemption from federal drug laws.

KAMLOOPS, B. C. -- A B. C. man accused of murdering his three young children made his first in-person court appearance since the April killings on Wednesday.

Allan Schoenborn was remanded in custody for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 12 on first-degree murder charges in the deaths of Kaitlynne, 10, Max, eight, and Cordon, five.

The children's mother found them dead in their Merritt, B. C., home on April 6.

Eight days have been set aside in a Kamloops court beginning in January for the preliminary hearing. A pre-trial conference is scheduled Nov. 20.

Crown prosecutor Sherri Mark requested the hearing take place in nearby Kamloops, rather than Merritt, due to security concerns.

After a 10-day manhunt, Schoenborn was found in the bush outside Merritt suffering from dehydration and exposure.

OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper met with his French counterpart Francois Fillon in Ottawa on Wednesday, with Afghanistan and a potential free-trade agreement between Canada and the European Union among the topics of discussion.

Harper and Fillon also discussed the upcoming G8 Summit, October's Francophonie Summit in Quebec City and the Canadian-European Union Summit to be held in Canada this fall.

It is during the fall meeting that the federal government hopes to begin negotiating a free-trade pact with the European Union. France has recently begun a six-month term as president of the EU council.

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. -- City officials Wednesday lifted a state of emergency that had been declared after a torrential downpour damaged at least 60 homes the day before.

Storm sewers quickly backed up, popping off manhole covers and creating small lakes and rivers on residential streets and main arterial roads around the city.

"It was more water than the system is designed to take and not a lot of time for it to do its job," said Doug Kaupp, general manager of water, wastewater and stormwater.

Lethbridge Mayor Bob Tarleck promised the city will study the incident to determine whether the current storm sewer capacity is sufficient.

The Stamford Kiwanis Club meets each Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the Best Western Cairn Croft on Lundy's Lane.
