Veteran Cong leader Prakashbapu Patil dies of heart attack...

Prakashbapu Patil, sitting Congress MP from Sangli in South Maharashtra and son of former State Chief Minister Vasantdada Patil, died of cardiac arrest at a city hospital this morning.

He was 58 and survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Mr Patil, who was admitted to Poona Hospital three days ago, suffered a heart attack last night and another one early this morning resulting in his demise, hospital sources said. He was not keeping good health for quite sometime.

Andhra Pradesh Governor Sushil Kumar Shinde and District Guardian Minister and Irrigation Minister Ajit Pawar called on at the hospital this morning soon after hearing the reports.

His body has been taken to Sangli where the funeral will take place tomorrow.

Born on June 21, 1947, Mr Patil was in his fifth term as the member of Lok Sabha from Sangli, having been earlier elected in 1984, 1989, 1991 and 1999. He did not contest in 1996 and 1998.

After the death of his father Vasantdada, Mr Prakash Patil took over the Chairmanship of the Vasantdada Shetkari Cooperative Sugar Factory and held the post for ten years.

With the sugar industry in problems, Mr Patil was in the forefront of a movement demanding Government's approval for co-generation from the sugar factories.

He was the chairman of a number of institutions including Vasantdada Sugar Works, Sangli, Maharashtra Rajya Sakhar Sangh, Mumbai and National Heavy Engineering, Delhi.
